9 Fit Tips for Western Saddles

Ensure your Western saddle fits like a dream with these 9 expert tips, designed to keep your horse happy and improve your riding experience.

The seat of the saddle should sit level and parallel to the ground when placed on your horse’s back.

Ensure there’s 2-3 fingers of clearance at the withers for normal withers. High or mutton withers may require adjustments.

The gullet should be wide enough (3-5 fingers) to avoid pressing on the spine or back muscles.

The saddle bars should make even contact along the horse’s back, allowing freedom of movement.

The billets should hang straight down, ensuring the girth is properly aligned and not pulling forward or backward.

The saddle should sit within the saddle support area, avoiding pressure on the shoulders or loins.

The saddle should sit evenly on the horse’s back, without tilting to one side. Tree points should clear the scapulae.

The tree angle should match the angle of the horse’s shoulder for proper positioning and comfort.

The tree width must allow for dynamic movement, ensuring the saddle fits during all phases of motion.
